42% of Canadians, aged 16 and older, lack basic literacy skills
A 1% increase in the literacy rate would generate $18 billion in economic growth annually
HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION
Canada’s national drop-out rate is 7.8%, but the issue is greater in some regions and populations
For example, 10% of the population in the Prairie provinces does not finish high school
High school drop-outs receive 85% of welfare payments, and represent 80% of inmates in federal prisons
BRIDGING TO POST-SECONDARY AND EMPLOYMENT
82% of college or university graduates are employed
55% of people with less than a high school education are employed
Each year of post-secondary education raises a person’s annual earnings by 8%
WHAT WE DO ABOUT IT:
LIFT invests in organizations that support Canadians with low education and literacy levels, and those who face barriers to education success including at-risk youth, indigenous Canadians, recent immigrants and those with mental health challenges. With TD Bank Group as the Founding Partner of our Education Impact Fund, we support organizations that build functional and financial literacy, support lifelong learning, increase high school completion, and provide bridging to further education and employment.
SUCCESS TO DATE:
Indspire’s vision is to enrich Canada through Indigenous education and by inspiring achievement. They invest in the education of Indigenous people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada. They serve First Nation, Inuit, and Métis students in remote communities, rural areas and urban centres across Canada. In 2016-17, Indspire awarded $11.6 million through 3,764 scholarships and bursaries to Indigenous students across Canada.
JUMP Math supports students to improve their math learning and comprehension. We are supporting the organization to expand its operations across Canada and in the U.S. Since partnering with LIFT, JUMP Math has had a 35 per cent increase in students reached. Read more about our work with JUMP Math.
Take a Hike Youth at Risk Foundation
