Furniture Bank

Furniture Bank is a registered charity and social enterprise that receives donations of gently used furniture and household goods from individuals and corporations, and provides them to people who have recently transitioned out of homelessness, women and children escaping abusive situations, refugees and newcomers to Canada. Furniture Bank operates the Leg Up employment program to provide work experience, life and skills training, and employment opportunities to youth, newcomers to Canada and other individuals facing barriers to employment. Participants are employed in its operations, including in the furniture warehouse and call centre, on pickup and delivery trucks, or as administrative and IT support, providing the organization with a valuable source of skills. Furniture Bank also engages corporate partners for out-placements, so participants are provided with opportunities to move on to full-time employment.

Lift Plan

LIFT and Furniture Bank have renewed their partnership engagement, ending no later than June 2018. LIFT will continue to work with Furniture Bank to help more households across Canada furnish their homes while at the same time providing additional employment opportunities for people with barriers. As part of this work, LIFT and Furniture Bank will develop a National Scaling Strategy to guide the organization’s growth over the next 3 years and support their expansion to a second location in Ontario. This renewed partnership builds on the initial work that has allowed Furniture Bank’s social enterprise to both scale its impact and become more efficient in its operations.
